Now I see the secret of the making of the best persons,
It is to grow in the open air and to eat and sleep with the earth.

I am Kris Laurie. I am currently canoeing the Missouri River from its utmost source in the Rocky Mountains of Montana to the Gulf of Mexico.  This paddling expedition is over 3,800 miles in length and may take more than half a year.  This website is to foster this trip, to communicate to you my dialogue with these wild places, and to get some of you outside, whether that means joining me for a week on the water or knocking the dust off that backpack in your closet.

I cannot pinpoint when the idea to paddle a big river emerged, but two things are certain: I would rather be outside than sitting at this computer, and my mother got really sick last year. She and I began brainstorming an adventure to work toward that would challenge her and keep her active. I think it was mutual that walking a 5k on a treadmill was not on the table.

Mom will join me for several weeks or more of this trip, as will a smattering of friends and family. This trip has become an opportunity to connect others with the redemptive qualities that can only be found through challenges that take place in the open air.
